On Saturday April 20th over 50 Hampton Bays Middle School students and staff participated in the Great East End Cleanup. A truck load of garbage was collected from the Ponquogue Beach area. Various student clubs and sports teams were represented including the National Junior Honor Society, OWL club, SADD, Builder’s Club, Varsity softball, Middle School track and field and M.S. lacrosse. Thanks to Rich Doulos and Laurie O’Halloran for spearheading this endeavor and to Middle School teachers and club advisors, Jennifer Destefano, Deanna Devon, Marianne Pendleberry, Teresa Strano, Jennifer Farrell, Elizabeth Lanni and Joan Moran. This participation shows the continuing commitment that the middle school has towards community service and the staffs’ efforts at ensuring middle schoolers have service opportunities. The group was delighted to receive appreciation from Councilman Christopher Nuzzi who came in person to extend the town’s thanks and to inform us that the Middle School team is the largest volunteer group in Southampton Town to participate in The Great East End Cleanup. The Hampton Bays Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society inducted 23 new members during it's annual candlelight induction ceremony on April 4th. We had 5 winning posters from HBMS for the "Greener Southampton Poster Contest." The winners were given a certificate and either a set of colored markers or colored pencils along with an Earth Day necklace compliments of the Town of Southampton. The winners were: 5th Graders- Sofia Gonzalez, Tristan Halsey, Mia Mielenhausen and Jaden Ottati 8th Grader- Jonathan Galeaz Nunez Winners will be presented a certificate by the Town of Southampton on Saturday, April 20th around 12:30 at the Stop and Shop grocery store in Hampton Bays. Their posters and facsimiles will be displayed at the Stop and Shop and Town Hall as well as being posted online at the town's website. Congratulations to All!! On January 3rd the 8th graders participated in the 5th Annual College Awareness Day. This event was organized by Middle School Counselor Laurie O’Halloran. Seven current college students visited the 8th grade classes to talk about college life. The college students are children of staff members at the school as well as Hampton Bays High School graduates. They shared their insights and perspective about attending college. Eighth graders had an opportunity to ask questions, learn about a typical college student’s schedule, factors that go into college selection and extra-curricular experiences offered at colleges.

Members of the middle school and high school S.A.D.D. Club went to the Bishop Ryan Senior Village on December 20 to spread holiday cheer to the seniors.
Congratulations to George Ramirez, an eighth grader at HB Middle School who took first place this week in the National Geographic Geography Bee qualifying round at HBMS. He now qualifies to compete on the state level — 100 New York students will get to participate in that round in April, based on written test scores. A National round will then commence in May with scholarships between $10,000 and $15,000 awarded to top champs.
On Friday December 7th student leaders from the Hampton Bays Middle School attended the Kids In Action Leadership Conference at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University in Greenvale, N.Y. This year’s conference theme was Stand Up and Speak Out Against Bullying. The students were members of the Student Council and representatives of the OWL club (outstanding willing leaders) and SADD club. Advisors, Toni Dossiano, Jeanne Polan and Laurie O’Halloran accompanied the group. Over 35 middle schools across Long Island were represented. Various dignitaries spoke to the students including the provost of LIU. The guest speaker was Keith Davis, former NFL Giant who shared his personal story about dealing with the issue of bullying. He shared some key ideas with the students, “tough times don’t last tough people do and you don’t have to be great to get started you just have to get started to be great.” Fifteen year old Lexxi Saal, singer and songwriter performed and then talked about how she spreads awareness using her website BeatitBully.com. The students will return to the middle school and continue to spread the conference message. Prior to the conference students conducted a search of the C.W Post college website and identified basic facts and features about this college. While on the campus they connected this information with their actual impressions of the school. They will use this information in future explorations of their college searches.
The 6th Grade Team is collecting newspapers (and other items) for the WILDLIFE RESCUE FUND of the HAMPTONS Please send in your old newspapers to Mrs. Renna and they will be sent over to the wildlife center. The Hampton Bays Middle School is pleased to announce that nine middle school students have been nominated to participate in the 2012 Talent Search sponsored by the Johns Hopkins University for Talented Youth. The Talent Search identifies and recognizes the academic abilities and success of high-achieving students. These students scored in the 95th percentile on their state assessments during the 2011-2012 school year. The OWL club (Outstanding Willing Leaders) under the direction of school counselor Laurie O’Halloran held the annual New Student Welcome Breakfast on October 4th. Over 25 new students have been enrolled in our middle school and this breakfast was an opportunity for OWL club members to provide support as these students become acquainted with the middle school. OWL club members discussed a variety of topics with the new students such as clubs and extracurricular opportunities. OWL club members will be friendly faces to the new students as they transition into our school.
